The so-called "7.5-minute maps" published by the USGS are large scale topographic maps that have long been popular with hikers, campers, hunters, and others who enjoy exploring the outdoors. One inch on a 7.5 minute map represents 2000 feet on the ground. Paper prints of this series are approximately 22 x 27 inches and are widely available at map dealers and retail stores selling outdoors equipment at prices around $6.00 per map. They are also available from the USGS at prices of $4.00 per map plus a handling charge.
Until recently, scanned images called "DRGs" of these maps were available from the USGS pre-packaged on CD-ROMs, most of which contain 64 7.5-minute maps plus three smaller scale maps, at a price of $32 plus handling - that's less than 50 cents per map. The maps on the typical CD-ROM cover a geographical area of width 1 degree longitude and height 1 degree latitude - about 60 x 50 miles.
Although these pre-packaged DRG CD-ROMs are no longer available from the USGS, they are available from Metabien (at prices similar to the USGS former pricing) with coverage of the four corners states from W 104 degrees and West, including essentially all of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah except for the plains areas in Eastern parts Colorado and New Mexico.
